Job Description: Looking to build real-world field experience this summer? This is a great opportunity for college students studying biology, botany, environmental science, or related fields.

Olmsted Legacy is hiring a seasonal vegetation survey technician to assist with field-based wetland botanical surveys in Oregon, collecting plant cover and species data in accordance with Oregon Department of State Lands monitoring protocols.

About the Job – Vegetation Survey Methods:

  • Surveyors will visually estimate percent cover of plant species within small sample plots (typically 1–2 m²), recording each species observed and noting whether ground is bare, vegetated, or covered by water/litter.
  • All plant species must be recorded by vegetation layer (herbaceous, shrub, or tree canopy), requiring close attention to detail and the ability to distinguish between plant types in the field.
  • Each plot location must be clearly marked and documented in field notebooks, including GPS coordinates where possible, so that data is verifiable after the field week is complete.

Qualifications / Experience Level Required:

The preferred candidate will be someone with knowledge of basic plant biology, willingness to examine things very closely and record in field notebooks. We will do one day training and provide basic equipment. Personal sun protection gear, gloves and boots must be provided by the employee.

The training will be for sampling protocols specifics that they will encounter, and we cover a level of insurance (workmen’s compensation) for the period of performance.

Duration: June 2026; one to two 40-hour weeks.
Disclosure: Current start date and duration is unknown; start date to be finalized in April 2026.

Per diem: $350/day. Lodging can be discussed.
Experience Level: -One year of Field Biology with understanding of plant ID.
