Job Description: Looking to build real-world field experience this summer? This is a great opportunity for college students studying biology, botany, environmental science, or related fields.
Olmsted Legacy is hiring a seasonal vegetation survey technician to assist with field-based wetland botanical surveys in Oregon, collecting plant cover and species data in accordance with Oregon Department of State Lands monitoring protocols.
About the Job – Vegetation Survey Methods:
- Surveyors will visually estimate percent cover of plant species within small sample plots (typically 1–2 m²), recording each species observed and noting whether ground is bare, vegetated, or covered by water/litter.
- All plant species must be recorded by vegetation layer (herbaceous, shrub, or tree canopy), requiring close attention to detail and the ability to distinguish between plant types in the field.
- Each plot location must be clearly marked and documented in field notebooks, including GPS coordinates where possible, so that data is verifiable after the field week is complete.
