Salary: $48,045 - $75,912 per year

The Fisheries Technician III – Field Crew Lead will coordinate day-to-day tasks on conservation properties with focal points on noxious weed control, grazing and irrigation management, public interactions, monitoring, and leading a crew of technicians to accomplish maintenance and implement uplands and aquatic restoration projects. The employee must be able to build relationships within the community, agencies, organizations, and the Tribes.  Once oriented to the job, the position requires the candidate to have problem-solving aptitude.  Experience in the operation of heavy equipment (i.e. Backhoe, Mini-excavator, and compact loader) is a must.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise a team of 2-3 technicians
  • Able to work both independently and with a crew, stay in regular communication with supervisor, document work and accomplishments in writing, keep duty station, shop, and yard clean and presentable to public at all times, and be professional and courteous at all times.
  • Experience with weed control, tree planting, forest cutting/thinning/burning, fence construction and maintenance, livestock management
  • Coordination with other field staff during the field season
  • Patrolling properties to observe issues with livestock, trespass, wildlife, etc.
  • Participating with restoration project implementation
  • Supervising volunteers occasionally
  • Operate backhoes, skid steers and mini-excavators, including loading and trailering equipment to job sites

Qualifications / Experience Level Required:

Knowledge & Skills (Qualifications):
  • Knowledge of fencing, noxious weeds, irrigation and equipment operation
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow directions
  • Must be comfortable with frequent travel to nearby project sites, often independently in rural locations throughout the John Day River Basin.
  • Leadership skills
  • Supervisory experience

Education and Experience:
  • An associate’s degree in Fisheries or Natural Resource studies, plus at least six months of experience natural resource type work OR a minimum of three years experience with fisheries/natural resources with strong proficiency in knowledge and skills.
  • Must have a current Oregon Driver’s License, be able to pass a Drug Test, and a Background Check upon hiring. Ability to obtain drone pilot’s license upon hiring is desired.
  • Ability to lift objects in excess of 50lbs, and ability to withstand several hours in hot and/or inclement weather.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain an Oregon Private Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 months.
  • Qualified individuals must have excellent people and communication skills
