Malheur Stewardship Seasonal Technician

Salary: $21/hr

Start / End Dates: Mid-May to Mid-Aug

The incumbent will serve as an interdisciplinary intern in support of Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge’s (FOMR’s) core programs; conservation stewardship and outreach. They will be responsible for representing FOMR’s mission of promoting the conservation and appreciation of Malheur NWR’s They will be responsible for conserving fish, wildlife, and/or plants, their habitats, and habitat restoration programs. Activities will include collecting and recording information and scientific data on habitat conditions, water level readings, aquatic plant production, etc.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Conservation Stewardship (40%) Support the Project Committee Chairperson with coordinating
    field projects and conducting project follow-up work.

    • Weeding noxious plants, maintaining irrigation, and groundskeeping as needed.
    • Developing interpretive materials for the FOMR website and newsletter to promote stewardship activities and recruit volunteers.
    • Work closely with volunteers to support various project needs.
  • Outreach/Education (40%) Assist Crane’s Nest Manager with various Crane’s Nest Nature Cetner
    and Store responsibilities.

    • Store staffing, volunteer management, inventory and sales, data entry, etc.
    • Develop and present interpretive programs (on-site and off-site).
    • Event planning and support.
  • Natural Resource Career Development (20%) On the job training in refuge operations with FWS
    staff and partner organizations.

    • Biological inventory and monitoring including data entry.
    • Surveys may include crane pair point counts, snowy plover surveys, waterfowl impoundment surveys, aquatic vegetation surveys, river flow tracking, etc.

Qualifications / Experience Level Required:

  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and oral instructions in a group or independently.
  • Aptitude for working outdoors under various environmental conditions and diverse habitats.
  • Experience with following established protocols for monitoring surveys, use of field equipment, data management software, etc.
  • U.S. Citizen or otherwise legally authorized to work in the U.S.
