Salary: $10,040 combined stipend distributed monthly; $7,040 is living allowance, $3,000 is housing allowance

 The BLM Prineville District is recruiting one AmeriCorps member beginning June 3rd, 2024, until August 23rd, 2024. The primary goal of this position is to prepare a student trainee for employment after graduation in positions such as an Outdoor Recreation Planner or Natural Resources Specialist. The member must complete an end of service project presentation (5-10 minutes in length) highlighting the key takeaways of their time with the agency. The AmeriCorps member will be assigned tasks designed to increase familiarity with the target occupation in a real-world work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities: This position will be focused on the management of National Conservation Lands. Work will consist of multi-day river trips, backpacking in remote areas, collecting data, and the chance to work alongside experienced BLM Outdoor Recreation Staff and partners.

Specific activities include

  • Backcountry recreation use data collection (50%*)
  • Data Processing and Presentation (30%)
  • Formal Job Training (20%)

*Percentages describe the estimated amount of time expected on each task, and are an AmeriCorps requirement

Qualifications / Experience Level Required:

Required Qualifications:Applicants must be currently pursuing either an associates, bachelors, or graduate degree.

  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age upon start date.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required.
  • Strong interest in outdoor recreation careers.
  • Experience in collecting field data or using mapping software such as ArcGIS Pro.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement (often hot) weather.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. (day pack, field equipment and supplies).
  • Willingness to hike multiple miles a day in wetlands, rivers, and riparian habitats.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheets and word processing programs.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and technology.
  • Willingness to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow direction provided by work leads.
  • Ability to follow strict surveying and data management/collection protocols.
  • Maintain current driver’s license and ability to report on time to the office in Prineville, Oregon

Desired Qualifications:
  • Current First Aid/CPR certifications.
  • White water river experience.
  • College-level course work in biology, ecology, or botany.
  • College-level course work or knowledge in hydrology or geomorphology.

Duty Location: The BLM Prineville District is home to 3 Wilderness Areas, 14 Wilderness Study Areas, and 6 Wild and Scenic Rivers. Duties are performed within BLM Prineville District Office boundary – Prineville, Oregon.

Terms of Employment: One AmeriCorps member will complete an 11-week 480-hour term of service, starting June 3rd, 2024, through August 23rd, 2024. The member must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits: $7,040 living allowance along with a $3,000 housing stipend for a total combined stipend of $10,040 dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the term of service. The member will have available a $1,000 reimbursement fund for gear, mileage, and training relevant to the position. Upon successful completion of program requirements, an education award amount of $1,824.07 is awarded to the member.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check. These positions are sponsored by The Corps Network’s OYSI and EAP program.
