Field Technician

This recruitment will be used to fill full-time Seasonal (May-September), technician and crew lead positions for the Northwest Bat Hub, a part of the HERS Lab, at Oregon State University-Cascades. These positions will be located in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho.

Our field crews work in pairs (1 crew lead & 1 tech) to conduct passive acoustic monitoring of bats across all of Oregon, Washington, or Idaho. Crews will drive and hike to remote survey sites to deploy Pettersson D500x bat detectors. They will work an 8-on, 6-off schedule and will camp near their survey sites most nights during the work week. Housing will be provided for the off days. Crews will also complete post-sunset listening surveys occasionally throughout the season. The position is ~90% fieldwork.

Qualifications / Experience Level Required:

At least two years of college-level courses in biology, wildlife science, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience including:
  • Working with bats, especially bat acoustic detector operation and maintenance (e.g. Pettersson, Anabat, and Wildlife Acoustics bat detectors)
  • Working outdoors under variable environmental and weather conditions (e.g., heat, heavy rain)
  • Hiking with heavy packs (up to 45 lbs) through rugged terrain
  • Working with field electronics – data loggers and sensor equipment, especially GPS technologies (e.g., tablets using Collector/Field Maps or Survey123)
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and file explorer
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team in remote locations
  • Ability to maintain positive attitude despite challenging circumstances
  • Experience hiking and camping in the backcountry
  • Experience driving in rugged terrain
